Lophophora

The *Lophophora* plant is a small, slow-growing cactus native to the southwestern United States and Mexico. It is most commonly known for the species *Lophophora williamsii*, also called peyote. This cactus is characterized by its small, rounded, and spineless appearance, typically with a bluish-green or grayish-green body divided into several ribs. The plant produces small, pink to white flowers at the top. *Lophophora williamsii* is particularly notable for containing psychoactive alkaloids, primarily mescaline, which has been used for centuries in Native American spiritual practices. Due to its psychoactive properties, its cultivation and use are heavily regulated in many regions.
